Marcia Brown was an American author and illustrator known for her contributions to children’s literature. She wrote and illustrated numerous picture books, many of which are retellings of folktales and fairy tales from around the world. Brown began her career as a teacher and librarian before turning to writing and illustrating books for children.
Her work is recognized for its distinctive artistic style and careful adaptation of traditional stories. Brown received multiple Caldecott Medals, an award given annually by the American Library Association to the artist of the most distinguished American picture book for children. Among her notable works are Cinderella, or the Little Glass Slipper, Once a Mouse…, and Shadow. Each of these titles received the Caldecott Medal, with Shadow winning in 1983.
