Marc Simont was a French-American illustrator and author known for his contributions to children’s literature. Born in Paris, Simont moved to the United States as a young man and studied at the National Academy of Design in New York. He began his career as an illustrator in the 1930s and went on to illustrate over a hundred books for children.
Simont collaborated with several prominent authors, including James Thurber, for whom he illustrated The 13 Clocks and The Wonderful O. He is also recognized for his work with author Ruth Krauss on The Happy Day, which was published in 1949. Simont both wrote and illustrated his own books, such as The Stray Dog, which was published in 2001.
Among his notable achievements, Simont received the Caldecott Medal in 1957 for his illustrations in A Tree Is Nice by Janice May Udry. He was also a two-time Caldecott Honor recipient, for The Happy Day in 1950 and The Stray Dog in 2002. In addition to his picture book work, Simont illustrated the Nate the Great detective series by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat.
Marc Simont’s career spanned several decades, and his illustrations have been recognized for their expressive style and contribution to children’s literature. His book The Stray Dog was named a Caldecott Honor Book in 2002.
