Malaka Gharib biography

Malaka Gharib is an American journalist, cartoonist, and author known for her work in graphic memoir and nonfiction. She is an editor and reporter at National Public Radio (NPR), where she covers topics related to global health and development. Gharib is the author of the graphic memoir I Was Their American Dream, published by Clarkson Potter in 2019. The memoir explores her experiences growing up as a Filipino Egyptian American and addresses themes of identity, family, and belonging.

Gharib’s work has appeared in various publications, and she is recognized for her distinctive illustration style, which combines hand-drawn comics with personal narrative. In addition to her memoir, she has contributed to NPR’s coverage through comics journalism and visual storytelling. Gharib is also the author of It Won’t Always Be Like This, a graphic memoir published by Ten Speed Press in 2022, which recounts her summers in Egypt and her relationship with her father and stepfamily.

Her debut memoir, I Was Their American Dream, was a finalist for the 2019 National Book Critics Circle Award in the Autobiography category.
