Maggie Tokuda-Hall biography

Maggie Tokuda-Hall is an American author known for her work in children’s and young adult literature. She holds an MFA in Writing from the University of San Francisco. Tokuda-Hall has written picture books, middle grade, and young adult novels, often exploring themes of identity, family, and social justice.

Her debut picture book, Also an Octopus, illustrated by Benji Davies, was published by Candlewick Press in 2016. She is also the author of the young adult novel The Mermaid, the Witch, and the Sea, published by Candlewick Press in 2020. This novel blends fantasy and adventure, following characters navigating issues of power and belonging.

In addition to her novels, Tokuda-Hall wrote the picture book Love in the Library, illustrated by Yas Imamura and published by Candlewick Press in 2022. This book is based on the true story of her grandparents, who met in a Japanese American incarceration camp during World War II.

Tokuda-Hall’s work has received recognition from several organizations. Love in the Library was named a 2023 Asian/Pacific American Award for Literature Honor Book for Picture Book.
