Koyoharu Gotouge biography

Koyoharu Gotouge is the pen name used by the Japanese manga creator who writes and illustrates Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Gotouge has kept their personal identity out of the public eye, while publishers and professional sources consistently credit the name Koyoharu Gotouge for the series and its artwork.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba began publication through Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump in 2016 and was collected in 23 volumes. Set in Taisho-era Japan, the story follows Tanjiro Kamado after his family is attacked by demons and his surviving sister, Nezuko, is transformed into one. Tanjiro trains with the Demon Slayer Corps while searching for a way to restore Nezuko’s humanity.

VIZ Media publishes the manga in the United States under its Shonen Jump imprint. The first US volume appeared on July 3, 2018, and VIZ classifies the series as Teen. The 23rd and final US volume was released on August 3, 2021. The manga has also provided the source material for television and film adaptations, including Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train.

Gotouge was included in the Phenoms section of the 2021 TIME100 Next list. Earlier manga by Gotouge has also been collected in Koyoharu Gotouge Before Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba, which contains four supernatural short stories, including work featuring characters and ideas that preceded Demon Slayer. VIZ Media released the US edition of that collection on October 8, 2024.
