Kazu Kibuishi biography

Kazu Kibuishi is a Japanese-born American graphic novelist, illustrator, and editor, best known as the creator of the bestselling Amulet graphic novel series. He moved to the United States in childhood and graduated from the University of California, Santa Barbara with a degree in film studies in 2000. Early in his career, Kibuishi worked as an animator before focusing on comics and graphic novels.

He is the creator and editor of the comics anthology Flight, which ran for eight volumes and showcased emerging and established artists in the field. Kibuishi also launched the Explorer anthology series, aimed at younger readers. His early graphic novel Daisy Kutter: The Last Train received recognition from the Young Adult Library Services Association.

Kibuishi’s Amulet series, published by Scholastic’s Graphix imprint, began in 2008 with Amulet: The Stonekeeper and concluded with its ninth volume, Amulet: Waverider, in 2024. The series has been translated into over 20 languages and has appeared on the New York Times bestseller list.

In addition to his original work, Kibuishi was commissioned to illustrate the 15th-anniversary covers for the US editions of J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, released in 2013. He has also collaborated with other authors, including a 2024 picture book with Brandon Sanderson titled The Most Boring Book Ever.

Kibuishi’s work has received numerous honors, including an Eisner Award nomination for the Flight anthology.
