John Schoenherr biography

John Schoenherr was an American illustrator and artist known for his work in children’s literature and science fiction. He studied at the Pratt Institute, where he developed his skills in illustration. Schoenherr contributed artwork to a range of publications, including science fiction magazines and books.

Schoenherr illustrated numerous children’s books, collaborating with authors such as Jean Craighead George. He provided the illustrations for Julie of the Wolves by Jean Craighead George, which won the Newbery Medal in 1973. His distinctive style often featured detailed depictions of animals and natural environments, reflecting his interest in wildlife and the outdoors.

In addition to his work in children’s literature, Schoenherr is recognized for his illustrations in the science fiction genre. He created the original cover art and interior illustrations for Frank Herbert’s Dune when it was first serialized in Analog magazine in the 1960s.

John Schoenherr received the Caldecott Medal in 1988 for his illustrations in Owl Moon, written by Jane Yolen.
