Jillian Tamaki biography

Jillian Tamaki is a Canadian illustrator, cartoonist, and writer known for her work in graphic novels and comics. She studied at the Alberta College of Art and Design. Tamaki has contributed illustrations to publications such as The New York Times and The New Yorker.

She is the co-creator, with her cousin Mariko Tamaki, of the graphic novels Skim (2008) and This One Summer (2014), both published by Groundwood Books. This One Summer received critical recognition and was awarded the Caldecott Honor and the Printz Honor in 2015. Jillian Tamaki has also published solo works, including the graphic novel SuperMutant Magic Academy (2015) and Boundless (2017), both with Drawn & Quarterly.

In addition to her books, Tamaki has taught illustration at the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Her work spans a range of genres and audiences, from young adult to adult readers. In 2023, Jillian Tamaki and Mariko Tamaki published the graphic novel Roaming with Drawn & Quarterly.
