Recommended reading books for elementary, middle & high school students
Jay Hosler is an American author, biologist, and cartoonist known for creating science-themed graphic novels and comics for children and young adults. He holds a Ph.D. in biological sciences and is a professor of biology. Hosler’s work often combines scientific concepts with storytelling and illustration, aiming to make complex topics accessible and engaging for young readers.
Hosler’s first graphic novel, Clan Apis, was published in 2000. The book follows the life of a honeybee and introduces readers to the biology and ecology of bees through narrative and art. He continued to explore science through comics with The Sandwalk Adventures (2003), which features Charles Darwin as a character and discusses evolution and natural selection.
In 2011, Hosler published Evolution: The Story of Life on Earth, illustrated by Kevin Cannon and Zander Cannon. This graphic novel presents the history of life and evolutionary theory in a format designed for middle grade and young adult readers. Hosler has also written and illustrated Last of the Sandwalkers (2015), a graphic novel about beetles and scientific discovery.
Jay Hosler’s books have been recognized for their educational value and are used in classrooms to support science curricula. His work has received praise from educators and scientists for its accuracy and creativity. In 2016, Last of the Sandwalkers was included on the National Science Teachers Association’s Outstanding Science Trade Books list.
