Janet Stevens is an American author and illustrator known for her work in children’s literature. She has written and illustrated numerous picture books, often collaborating with her sister, Susan Stevens Crummel. Stevens is recognized for her distinctive, detailed artwork and her ability to bring animal characters to life.
Her debut as an illustrator came with the book See You Later, Alligator by Laura McGee Kvasnosky, published in 1985. Stevens has since illustrated and authored many books, including Tops & Bottoms, which she both wrote and illustrated. This book received a Caldecott Honor in 1996, as noted by the American Library Association.
Janet Stevens has also illustrated popular titles such as The Little Red Pen and Cook-a-Doodle-Doo!, both co-authored with Susan Stevens Crummel. Her work is frequently noted for its humor and engaging visual storytelling, making her books popular choices for read-alouds in classrooms and libraries.
In 1996, Stevens received a Caldecott Honor for Tops & Bottoms.
