James Marshall was an American author and illustrator known for his contributions to children’s literature. He is best recognized for creating the George and Martha series, which features two hippos and explores themes of friendship and humor. Marshall also wrote and illustrated the Fox series and contributed illustrations to the Miss Nelson books, written by Harry Allard.
Marshall’s distinctive illustration style and wit have been noted in his body of work, which includes both original stories and retellings of classic tales. He adapted and illustrated several fairy tales, such as Goldilocks and the Three Bears and Red Riding Hood. His books have been published by Houghton Mifflin and other major publishers.
James Marshall received the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 2007, an award given by the American Library Association to authors and illustrators whose books have made a substantial and lasting contribution to children’s literature.
