Jack London was an American novelist, journalist, and social activist known for his adventure stories and exploration of survival, nature, and individualism. He was born John Griffith Chaney in San Francisco in 1876 and raised in working-class surroundings. As a teenager, he worked in canneries, factories, and on sealing ships, experiences that would later shape his literary themes.
In 1897, London joined the Klondike Gold Rush in Canada’s Yukon Territory. Although he did not find gold, the harsh conditions and frontier life provided material for his most famous works, including The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906). These novels, set in the Yukon wilderness, depict the relationship between humans and animals and the struggle for survival.
London was a prolific writer, publishing dozens of books, short stories, and essays. His other notable works include The Sea-Wolf (1904), Martin Eden (1909), and The Iron Heel (1908), a dystopian novel exploring class struggle and authoritarianism. In addition to fiction, he wrote extensively on politics and society, identifying with socialist causes and addressing labor and economic inequality.
London was one of the first American writers to achieve worldwide fame and commercial success during his lifetime. His writing combined action-driven storytelling with philosophical and social commentary, appealing to a wide readership.
Jack London died in 1916 at the age of 40.
