J Anderson Coats is an American author known for writing historical fiction for children and young adults. She holds degrees in history from the University of Washington and the University of Vermont. Coats’s work often explores themes of power, justice, and the experiences of young people in historical settings.
Her debut novel, The Wicked and the Just, was published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in 2012. The book is set in medieval Wales and follows the lives of two girls from different backgrounds during a time of political upheaval. The Wicked and the Just received a 2013 YALSA Best Fiction for Young Adults selection.
Coats has also written A Season of Daring Greatly (2017), which centers on a young woman breaking barriers in professional baseball, and The Many Reflections of Miss Jane Deming (2017), a middle grade novel set in 1860s Washington Territory. Her other works include R is for Rebel (2018), Spindle and Dagger (2020), and The Night Ride (2021).
