Ibtihaj Muhammad biography

Ibtihaj Muhammad is an American author and Olympic medalist known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature. She gained international recognition as a member of the United States fencing team, becoming the first American woman to compete in the Olympics wearing a hijab. Muhammad has written several books for young readers, drawing on her experiences as an athlete and advocate for inclusion.

Her picture book The Proudest Blue: A Story of Hijab and Family, co-authored with S.K. Ali and illustrated by Hatem Aly, was published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers in 2019. The book explores themes of identity, family, and confidence, inspired by Muhammad’s own life. She has also authored the middle grade memoir Proud: Living My American Dream, which was published by Little, Brown Books for Young Readers in 2018. This memoir adapts her adult autobiography for younger audiences, sharing her journey in sports and her experiences overcoming obstacles.

Muhammad’s work has been recognized for its focus on representation and empowerment. In 2020, The Proudest Blue was named a New York Times Best Illustrated Children’s Book.
