Hope Larson, born on October 17, 1982, is an American cartoonist and writer known for her work in the graphic novel industry. She grew up in Asheville, North Carolina, where her passion for storytelling and art began to flourish. Larson’s interest in comics was sparked at a young age when she discovered the works of influential artists such as Will Eisner and Osamu Tezuka.
After completing high school, Larson pursued her education at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. During her time there, she honed her skills in illustration and graphic design, laying the foundation for her future career in the comic book industry.
Following her graduation, Larson started working on her first graphic novel, “Salamander Dream,” which was published in 2005. The book received critical acclaim for its beautiful artwork and poignant storytelling, establishing Larson as a rising talent in the industry.
Her breakthrough came in 2008 with the release of “Chiggers,” a coming-of-age story set at a summer camp. The graphic novel resonated with readers of all ages, earning Larson an Eisner Award nomination for Best Publication for Teens.
Larson’s career continued to flourish with a string of successful graphic novels. In 2012, she adapted Madeleine L’Engle’s classic novel “A Wrinkle in Time” into a graphic novel format, introducing the story to a new generation of readers. The adaptation received widespread praise for its faithful interpretation and stunning artwork.
Another notable work by Larson is “Compass South,” a historical adventure series set in the 19th century. The graphic novel, published in 2016, follows the thrilling journey of twin brothers as they search for their missing father. Larson’s meticulous research and attention to detail brought the story to life, captivating readers with its rich historical backdrop.
In addition to her solo projects, Larson has collaborated with renowned authors such as Brian K. Vaughan and Gail Carson Levine. Her collaboration with Vaughan on the graphic novel “Runaways: Find Your Way Home” further solidified her reputation as a versatile and talented artist.
Larson’s contributions to the graphic novel industry have not gone unnoticed. Her work has garnered numerous accolades, including multiple Eisner Award nominations and a prestigious Ignatz Award for Outstanding Graphic Novel.
