Haro Aso is a Japanese manga creator known to English-language readers for three series published by Shogakukan and released in translation by major US publishers. His early breakout, Hyde & Closer (2008–2010), ran in Weekly Shōnen Sunday and introduced his interest in fast-paced, supernatural adventure for teen audiences.
Aso’s best-known work, Alice in Borderland (Imawa no Kuni no Alice, 2010–2016), was serialized in Shogakukan magazines and later collected in tankōbon editions. The story follows survival-game challenges set in a deserted Tokyo. A sequel project, Alice in Borderland: Retry, appeared after the main series concluded. Alice in Borderland was adapted as a live-action series distributed worldwide on Netflix, bringing the manga to a broad YA and adult crossover audience.
As a writer in collaboration with illustrator Kotaro Takata, Aso created Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (2018– ), published in Monthly Sunday Gene-X. The series combines horror, comedy, and coming-of-age elements as its protagonist attempts a “bucket list” during a zombie outbreak. It has been issued in English and adapted as a television anime (2023) and a live-action feature (2023).
Across these projects Aso has worked primarily with Shogakukan imprints, building series that move from magazine serialization to collected volumes and then to screen adaptations. His bibliography places him within the mainstream of contemporary shōnen and seinen entertainment read by older middle-grade and teen audiences in the US.
