Guadalupe García McCall biography

Guadalupe García McCall is a Mexican American author known for her works in young adult literature. Born in Mexico, she immigrated to the United States as a child. García McCall writes novels and poetry that often explore themes of identity, family, and cultural heritage. Her debut novel, Under the Mesquite, was published by Lee & Low Books in 2011. This novel, written in verse, tells the story of a young Mexican American girl navigating family challenges and cultural expectations.

García McCall has also written Summer of the Mariposas, published by Tu Books in 2012, which reimagines Homer’s Odyssey through the journey of five sisters traveling from Texas to Mexico. Her other works include Shame the Stars (Tu Books, 2016), a historical novel set during the Mexican Revolution, and All the Stars Denied (Tu Books, 2018), which addresses the Mexican Repatriation of the 1930s.

In addition to her writing, García McCall is an educator. Her books have been recognized by various literary organizations and have appeared on recommended reading lists for young readers. Under the Mesquite received the Pura Belpré Author Award in 2012.
