Gareth Hinds is an American illustrator and graphic novelist acclaimed for his adaptations of classic literature into graphic novel form. Born in 1971, he pursued studies at the Rochester Institute of Technology from 1989 to 1991 and earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Parsons School of Design in 1994. Hinds began his career in the video game industry, contributing artwork to titles such as Flight Unlimited and Ratatouille.
Transitioning to publishing, Hinds self-published works like Bearskin (1997) and King Lear (2007). His breakthrough came with Beowulf (2007), which garnered attention in educational circles and led to a partnership with Candlewick Press. He has since adapted several literary classics into graphic novels, including Shakespeare’s Macbeth, King Lear, Romeo and Juliet, and The Merchant of Venice; Homer’s The Odyssey and The Iliad; and works by Edgar Allan Poe.
Hinds’s adaptations are noted for their fidelity to the original texts and their appeal to young readers. His version of The Odyssey received four starred reviews and was listed among the top ten graphic novels for youth in 2010. In 2019, he published The Iliad, offering a visual retelling of the Trojan War epic.
Beyond his publications, Hinds has taught at the Massachusetts College of Art and exhibited his work in venues such as the Society of Illustrators and the New York Historical Society.
