Frank Abe biography

Frank Abe is an American journalist, filmmaker, and author known for his work on the history and legacy of Japanese American incarceration during World War II. He has produced and directed documentaries, including Conscience and the Constitution, which explores the story of Japanese Americans who resisted the draft from inside the camps. Abe has contributed to educational and historical projects, including co-editing the anthology RESISTERS: A Legacy of Movement from the Japanese American Incarceration.

In 2020, Frank Abe co-authored the graphic novel We Hereby Refuse: Japanese American Resistance to Wartime Incarceration with Tamiko Nimura, illustrated by Ross Ishikawa and Matt Sasaki. The book was published by Chin Music Press in partnership with the Wing Luke Museum. We Hereby Refuse presents the stories of Japanese Americans who challenged their incarceration and the government’s policies during World War II.

Frank Abe’s work has been recognized for its contribution to the understanding of civil rights and Japanese American history. We Hereby Refuse was named a 2022 American Library Association Notable Social Studies Trade Book for Young People.
