Eden Royce biography

Eden Royce is an author known for her contributions to children’s and young adult literature, as well as speculative fiction. She grew up in Charleston, South Carolina, and her writing often draws on the culture and folklore of the American South, particularly the traditions of the Gullah-Geechee people. Royce has written short stories, essays, and novels that explore themes of heritage, family, and the supernatural.

Her debut middle grade novel, Root Magic, was published by Walden Pond Press in 2021. The book is set in South Carolina in the 1960s and follows twins Jez and Jay as they learn about rootwork, a form of folk magic practiced in their community. Root Magic has been recognized for its exploration of cultural identity and history, and it was named a Walter Dean Myers Honor Book for Outstanding Children’s Literature in 2022.

In addition to her novel, Royce has published short fiction in various anthologies and magazines, focusing on horror, fantasy, and Southern Gothic themes. She is also a member of the Horror Writers Association. Royce’s work is noted for its authentic representation of Southern Black folklore and its emphasis on family and tradition.

Her novel Root Magic received the Walter Dean Myers Honor in 2022.
