Ed Young was a Chinese-American author and illustrator known for his contributions to children’s literature. Born in China, he later moved to the United States, where he studied at the Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Young began his career as a commercial artist before turning to children’s books, both as an illustrator and an author.
Young illustrated more than 80 books for children, often drawing on Chinese folklore and stories from around the world. His distinctive style incorporated a variety of media, including collage, pastel, and ink. He received the Caldecott Medal in 1990 for illustrating Lon Po Po: A Red-Riding Hood Story from China, published by Philomel Books. In addition to the Caldecott Medal, Young was awarded Caldecott Honors for The Emperor and the Kite by Jane Yolen in 1968 and Seven Blind Mice in 1993.
Throughout his career, Ed Young was recognized for his ability to blend visual storytelling with cultural themes. His book Lon Po Po was published in 1989 and remains a significant work in children’s literature.
