E.L. Konigsburg was an American author and illustrator known for her contributions to children’s literature. She was born Elaine Lobl and began her career as a writer in the 1960s. Konigsburg wrote and illustrated several books for young readers, often exploring themes of individuality, family, and self-discovery.
Her debut novel, From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler, was published by Atheneum Books in 1967. The book follows the adventures of two siblings who run away to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. This novel received the Newbery Medal in 1968.
Konigsburg also wrote Jennifer, Hecate, Macbeth, William McKinley, and Me, Elizabeth, which was published in 1967 and was named a Newbery Honor book in 1968. Over her career, she authored more than a dozen books, including The View from Saturday, which won the Newbery Medal in 1997.
In addition to her writing, Konigsburg illustrated several of her own books. Her works have been recognized for their distinctive characters and thoughtful exploration of complex issues relevant to young readers. E.L. Konigsburg received the Newbery Medal for The View from Saturday in 1997.
