D.W. Gillespie was born and raised in Middle Tennessee. He wrote his first short story in second grade, and that early story involved monsters. He began writing seriously after taking a creative writing class in college.
Gillespie writes dark fiction, including horror, dark science fiction and fantasy. His work has appeared in multiple horror anthologies in print and online. His books include The Toy Thief, Still Dark and the short story collection Handmade Monsters.
One by One is a horror novel about Alice Easton, a child who finds a drawing hidden under wallpaper after her family moves into an old house. The book was published by Flame Tree Press on 26 September 2019 and is 240 pages long.
His later books for younger readers include Give Me Something Good to Eat, Grin and The Doll House. The Doll House was published by Delacorte Press on 24 June 2025.
