Clement Hurd was an American artist and illustrator known for his work in children’s literature. He studied painting in Paris before returning to the United States, where he began illustrating books. Hurd is best recognized for his collaboration with author Margaret Wise Brown. Together, they created the classic picture book Goodnight Moon, first published by Harper & Brothers in 1947. Hurd also illustrated The Runaway Bunny, another well-known book by Brown, published in 1942. Over his career, Hurd illustrated more than one hundred books, including several written by his wife, Edith Thacher Hurd. His distinctive illustration style has become closely associated with mid-20th-century American children’s literature. One of his most enduring works, Goodnight Moon, was published in 1947.
