Celia C. Pérez is an American author and librarian known for her middle grade novels. She is the author of The First Rule of Punk, published by Viking Books for Young Readers in 2017. The novel centers on a young girl named Malú who navigates her identity and love for punk music while adjusting to a new school. Pérez’s work often explores themes of culture, family, and self-expression.
Pérez is also the author of Strange Birds: A Field Guide to Ruffling Feathers, released by Kokila in 2019. This book follows four girls in a Florida town as they form a friendship and challenge a local tradition. Her writing has been recognized for its focus on Latinx characters and experiences.
In addition to her writing, Pérez is a librarian. She has contributed to anthologies and has been involved in library and literacy initiatives. Her debut novel, The First Rule of Punk, was named a 2018 Pura Belpré Author Honor Book.
