Brandon Sanderson biography

Brandon Sanderson is an American author known for his contributions to the fantasy and science fiction genres. Born in December 1975 in Lincoln, Nebraska, he developed an interest in fantasy literature during his adolescence after reading Dragonsbane by Barbara Hambly. This experience influenced his decision to pursue writing.

Sanderson enrolled at Brigham Young University (BYU) in 1994 as a biochemistry major. Between 1995 and 1997, he served as a missionary in South Korea for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Upon returning, he changed his major to English and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in 2000. He later earned a Master of Arts in English from BYU in 2004. During his time at the university, he worked as a night desk clerk at a hotel, a position that allowed him to write extensively, resulting in the completion of several manuscripts.

His first published novel, Elantris, was released by Tor Books in 2005. He gained further recognition with the Mistborn series and was later chosen to complete Robert Jordan’s The Wheel of Time series, contributing the final three volumes. Sanderson’s works are often interconnected within a shared universe known as the Cosmere, which includes series such as The Stormlight Archive, Mistborn, and standalone novels like Warbreaker and The Emperor’s Soul.

In addition to his adult fiction, Sanderson has authored young adult and middle-grade series, including The Reckoners, Skyward, and Alcatraz Versus the Evil Librarians. He also co-hosts the writing podcast Writing Excuses and teaches creative writing at Brigham Young University.
