Barbara Park was an American author best known for her work in children’s literature. She wrote more than fifty books for young readers, including picture books and novels. Park is widely recognized for creating the Junie B. Jones series, which follows the adventures of a spirited kindergartner and later first-grader. The first book in the series, Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus, was published in 1992 by Random House.
In addition to the Junie B. Jones series, Park wrote several middle-grade novels such as Skinnybones, My Mother Got Married (And Other Disasters), and Mick Harte Was Here. Her books often feature humor and relatable characters, appealing to young readers navigating school and family life.
Barbara Park received multiple Children’s Choice Awards and was recognized by the American Library Association for her contributions to children’s literature. Her final Junie B. Jones book, Junie B. Jones: Turkeys We Have Loved and Eaten (and Other Thankful Stuff), was published in 2012.
